President John Dramani Mahama has announced that some public universities in Ghana will soon be affiliated with some Universities in Canada.
The move, he said, was to ensure graduates of such schools had skills to prepare them for the job market.
The President noted that though Ghana could boast of impressive economic growth statistics, such growth had not translated into more jobs opportunities.
President John Mahama was addressing the media shortly after a closed door meeting with the Governor General of Canada, Governor David Johnson.
“Even though we have economic growth that is quite phenomenal; about 8% GDP per year, one of the major challenges facing us is how to transform that growth into jobs. One of the challenges we face is how to ensure that the graduates churned out of the Universities have the skills to prepare them for the world of work,” he stated.
“We are looking to see how we can affiliate some of our Universities with the Canadian Universities to see how we can collaborate to ensure that we put in curriculums that prepare our graduates when they come out,” President Mahama added.
On his part, Governor David Johnson said Canada was proud of its ties with Ghana.
“This country is a leader among African nations and our partner in the commonwealth and in so many numerous spheres of society…we share the goal of building a smarter, caring society in a just world,” he stated.
Governor Johnson further stated, “Learning is one of the keys to achieving our full potential as human beings and as whole societies; I am pleased to know the ways in which our educational ties are strengthening.”
“The people of our two countries [Ghana and Canada] are also partnering on initiatives to increase food security, access to clean water, secure livelihoods and fight diseases here in Ghana,” he added.
