Study: Zimbabwe has highest literacy rate in Africa, Ghana is 33rd

According to 2013 research published by The African Economist, Zimbabwe has the highest literacy rate at 90.7 followed by Equatorial Guinea at 87.0%. The literacy standard used was ability to read and write at age 15 and above.

South Africa and Kenya were ranked third and fourth respectively with 86.4 and 85%. The study considered total percentage of total population and gender into consideration when creating the list. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous county, was ranked 21st while Egypt, Rwanda and Ghana were ranked 16th, 17th and 33rd respectively.
