The University of Ghana has held its annual matriculation ceremony to officially welcome fresh students to pursue various programs in the school’s Main and City campuses.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey in his address Saturday encouraged the fresh students to be of good behavior and live in accordance with the rules and regulations of the University while pursuing their programs. He also called on them to support the university by cooperating and remaining committed to the University’s vision of becoming a world-class institution of higher learning.
Commenting on the admissions process, Prof. Aryeetey said the process had been very stressful as the University had been faced with the painful exercise of turning down many applications of otherwise well qualified applications due to limitations in its staff and facilities and also the two cohorts of Senior High School graduates from last May/June’s WASSCE exams.
At total of 14,695 undergraduate students excluding Distance Learning students were admitted this year out of the 52,202 applications received indicating a 70% increase in applications from last year’s 36,537 total applications.
Ms. Brenda YirenkyiwaaAwuku in a statement on behalf of the 2013 matriculation class drew the attention of the University to some challenges being faced by fresh students and called for actions to have them resolved.
She also appealed to the government to resolve issues affecting the welfare of lecturers, administrators and other staff while assuring the university they will stick to the matriculation oath and proceed with integrity to make their parents and the nation proud.
