UCC wins GUSA games again

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has once again won the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games. The university swept 25 gold medals, 24 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals at the 24th edition of GUSA games held at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

UCC won the earlier edition of GUSA games it hosted in 2014.

The 2016 GUSA games was held from January 4 -16, 2016 with the theme, ‘Developing and Sustaining Sporting Talents for Ghana’. UEW and University of Ghana (UG) took the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

1st – UCC – 25 gold, 23 silver, 15 bronze
2nd – UEW – 21 gold, 22 silver, 16 bronze
3rd – UG – 15 gold, 11 silver, 18 bronze
4th – KNUST – 4 gold, 7 silver, 12 bronze
5th – UPSA – 0 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze
6th – UDS – 0 gold, 0 silver, 1 bronze
7th – UENR and UMaT – 0 gold, 0 silver, 0 bronze

The 2016 games came to a successful end with host UEW beating University for Development Studies (UDS) 3-1 penalties in the closing match to pick the silver medal in soccer after UCC thrashed University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) 4-0 to pick the gold medal earlier in the day having won all their 6 other matches.

Participating in the games were the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Ghana, Legon (Legon), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), University of Development Studies, Tamale (UDS), University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa (UMaT), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), and University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani (UENR).

The surprise award, “Best Entertaining GUSA Athlete” went to Robert Ameyaw Rodriguez (Mugabe) of UENR for treating officials, participants, and spectators with his song “Obia tu”.

In 2018, UDS will welcome the other public universities to the 25th edition of GUSA games.
